Tesla’s current documentation lists Powershare home backup as available for compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, with Powerwall 3 and a Universal or Gen 3 Wall Connector required. For eligible owners, the car’s battery can extend household backup during an outage, giving it a job beyond driving.
Tesla’s support page, accessed October 8, 2026, says “all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the U.S. and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 are capable of Powershare,” along with some vehicles produced earlier. Existing owners should check Software, then Additional Vehicle Information, on the touchscreen for an enabled Powershare Support setting. An older car’s eligibility needs that check; Tesla says some earlier vehicles lack support.
Powerwall 3 is required today
The distinction that matters is which home battery you own. Tesla’s installation documentation lists Powershare as available now with Powerwall 3, while support for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ is described as coming soon, without a firm date. The separate Powershare Gateway setup that works without Powerwall is listed for Cybertruck, not Model 3 or Model Y.
Setup also takes more than plugging in. The Powerwall and Wall Connector must share a Wi-Fi network, be registered at the same site and be paired; Tesla directs owners to customer support for activation. Installers must place the Wall Connector breaker within the backed-up circuit and design the system for outages when the car is away.
Tesla estimates Standard versions can add up to two days of backup, using assumptions of 30 kWh of daily household consumption and a vehicle charged to 90%. Actual duration depends on household demand and available charge.
Check Powershare Support on your touchscreen, then confirm the equipment meets Tesla’s setup requirements and contact Tesla customer support for activation.
