Tesla (TSLA) has expanded Powershare home backup to eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the United States and Puerto Rico, paired with Powerwall 3. Owners can use their car’s battery to keep the house running longer during an outage, provided both the vehicle and home equipment support it.

Tesla updated its Powerwall installation documentation on October 6, 2026 to include Model 3 and Model Y, a separate date from the vehicle order eligibility cutoff. Tesla’s product page says new vehicles ordered on October 1, 2026 or later qualify, although its eligibility footnote and support page use “after October 1.” Some earlier-built cars also qualify, but Tesla doesn’t give a complete production-date cutoff. Owners can check Software, then Additional Vehicle Information, on the touchscreen for an enabled Powershare Support entry.

Powerwall 3 is required today

The installation documents make the distinction clear: Model 3 and Model Y home backup is available with Powerwall 3 and either a Universal Wall Connector or a third-generation Wall Connector. Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility is still a plan, with no launch date listed. The alternative setup using a Powershare Gateway without Powerwall remains limited to Cybertruck.

For an existing compatible Powerwall and charger setup, Tesla says no extra equipment is necessary. The devices must share a Wi-Fi network, be registered at the same site and be paired; its support page directs owners to contact Tesla to enable the feature. The “Prerequisites” section of the Model Y Owner’s Manual chapter “Powershare Home Backup” also requires vehicle software 2026.32.6 or later and Tesla app version 4.60.0 or higher.

Tesla estimates Standard versions can add up to two days of backup, while Premium and Performance versions can add more than two. Those estimates assume a 90% vehicle charge and household consumption of 30 kWh daily, so actual duration depends on your starting charge and electricity use.

For Model Y owners, the manual’s “To Use Powershare Home Backup” section says to enable Powershare on the touchscreen under Controls, then Charging, then Powershare. The car must be plugged into the compatible Wall Connector and have charge remaining above the Powershare discharge limit to provide backup power.
