Musk says SpaceXAI becomes SpaceXSI, with no date or filing yet

Despite some early headlines, SpaceX itself isn't being renamed. Musk confirmed a change for the AI unit in a post on X, with no timeline and nothing filed.

Elon Musk says SpaceX's AI business will drop "AI" from its name and become SpaceXSI. That would be the unit's third name since February. If you own SpaceX (SPCX) shares, what he didn't say is just as important: the parent company isn't being renamed, and so far there's no date, no filing and no official statement.

Musk confirmed the change in a reply on X early Sunday. A user asked whether SpaceXAI would become SpaceXSI, and he wrote: "Yes, we will make that change." Before that he had posted "No more AI," then "SI" and "It's better."

What you need to know

  • The AI unit gets the new name, not SpaceX. Reuters reports that the change covers SpaceXAI, the division built from Musk's xAI. Some early headlines said SpaceX as a whole was being renamed.
  • There's no timeline and nothing on paper. Musk didn't give a date, and SpaceXAI didn't immediately answer Reuters' request for comment. When Reuters published, the unit's X account still showed the old name. Teslarati says it's unclear whether this will be a legal name change or only new branding.
  • This is the third name in eight months. SpaceX bought xAI on February 2, and the unit became SpaceXAI on July 6.
  • The stock listing has already happened. SpaceX went public on Nasdaq on June 12 under the ticker SPCX. It sold shares at $135 each and raised about $75 billion. Musk said nothing about the ticker or the parent company's name.
  • The name matters because AI is most of the pitch. About 90% of the $28.5 trillion market SpaceX said it could address was tied to AI through xAI, according to a summary of its prospectus.

Musk appears to be following President Trump, who signed an executive order on September 29 telling federal agencies to replace "artificial intelligence" with "super intelligence".

The next thing to watch is whether the rename shows up anywhere official, such as a securities filing, the company website or the unit's X account. Until then, it's a promise made in a reply on X. Would a new name change how you think about SpaceX's AI business?
