Elon Musk says SpaceXAI, the artificial intelligence arm of SpaceX (SPCX) that makes the Grok chatbot, will be renamed SpaceXSI. Right now that rests on one reply on X, and Musk hasn't said when it will happen. We found no filing or press release, so treat it as a stated plan, not a done deal.
On Sunday a user on X asked Musk whether SpaceXAI would become SpaceXSI. His answer: "Yes, we will make that change." Earlier that morning he had posted "No more AI," then "SI" and "It's better."
What you need to know
- It's only Musk's word so far. When Reuters published, the @SpaceXAI account on X still had its old name, Musk had given no timeline and the unit hadn't answered a request for comment. He also hasn't said whether this is a legal name change or just new branding.
- The "SI" comes from Washington. On September 29, President Trump signed an executive order telling federal agencies to swap "artificial intelligence" and "AI" for "Super Intelligence" and "SI" on government websites and in official documents. At the UN General Assembly last month, Trump called "super" the "much more accurate" word.
- This would be name number three since February. SpaceX bought xAI in a deal announced in early February that valued the two companies together at $1.25 trillion. xAI brought Grok and the social network X with it. On July 6 the division took the SpaceXAI name and a new logo.
- The unit is bigger than a chatbot. Teslarati says it covers Grok, X, the Colossus training clusters in Memphis, the coding tool Cursor (bought in August) and SpaceX's plans for computing in orbit. Calcalist reports SpaceX is spending heavily on computing capacity that it also sells to outside customers.
- Shareholders now get a say in how this is handled. SpaceX has been public since June 12, trading on Nasdaq as SPCX after an IPO that raised about $85.7 billion. The news broke on a weekend, so the stock hasn't traded on it yet. A name alone doesn't change revenue or costs. If the change is formal, though, it would likely show up in SEC filings, and that's where to look for confirmation.
What to watch next: whether SpaceX confirms the change itself, the @SpaceXAI handle changes, or Grok gets new branding. Here's a question for you: does calling it "superintelligence" change what you expect from Grok, or is it just a new label?
