Renters who can't plug in at home may soon find chargers in their building's garage. LAZ Parking, which operates roughly 2.1 million spaces at 5,700 locations across the US and Canada, is launching an apartment and condo charging service built on EverCharge's power-sharing software.
The offering is called LAZ Multifamily EV Charging Powered by EverCharge SmartPower, and it covers LAZ's US footprint. EverCharge is a wholly owned subsidiary of indiGOtech, known as GO.
How the power sharing works
In many apartment buildings the hurdle isn't the parking space but the electrical supply. Upgrading it can make a project expensive before a single car plugs in.
SmartPower divides available power among connected cars in real time, depending on what each one needs. The companies claim that lets a building host up to five times as many ports on the same supply. That's their figure, and we haven't seen independent testing. The trade-off is that each car may draw less at a given moment when many are plugged in, and the announcement doesn't say how that plays out for residents.
Scale, and what's missing
EverCharge says it already operates over 10,000 ports across more than 1,000 residential properties, with upwards of 50,000 registered drivers. LAZ says the tie-up lifts the combined network to 25,000 ports in North America. That's the total, not a target for new installs, and no timeline was given.
Chargers will be EverCharge's EVO3 Level 2 units. Resident pricing and the first properties haven't been disclosed. The companies also say they intend to look at charging and battery swapping for delivery vans, taxis and other business fleets, which is an intention, not a product.
Watch for named buildings and a price list. Would you pay extra for a garage charger that might slow down when your neighbors plug in?
