BYD unveiled its seven-seat Atto 8 SUV at the Paris Motor Show on Monday, October 12, and says it can take a nearly empty battery to nearly full in nine minutes. Sales in Europe are planned for early 2027, and the charging and range figures are BYD's own claims, as reported by Electrek and Electric Cars Report.

What is the Atto 8?

It's BYD's new flagship electric SUV for Europe, a full-size seven-seater that lands in the same size class as the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9. It sits above the Atto 2, Atto 3, Sealion 5 and Seal U in the brand's European line-up.

It's also the first BYD in Europe to get the company's second-generation Blade battery and its Flash Charging system. Stella Li, a BYD executive vice president, called it the "perfect example" of the company's latest technology.

Why is the charging claim such a big deal?

Because it would make a big electric SUV nearly as quick to refuel as a coffee stop. BYD says the battery goes from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, and it also claims a fast charge in deep cold, down to -30°C, which is normally when charging slows to a crawl.

Those are BYD's own figures under its own conditions, not independent tests. Real results will depend on the charger, the battery temperature and the network. And that network is the catch: BYD says it wants 3,000 Flash Charging stations across Europe by the end of 2027. Until they exist, the headline number stays theoretical for most owners.

What are the specs?

Both versions share the same large battery, and BYD quotes the official European (WLTP) range test. The figures below are as BYD presented them and as relayed by Electrek and Electric Cars Report. EasternEye's report is a secondary account of the same announcement.

Version Drive 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) WLTP range
Design RWD Rear motor 8.0 sec up to 405 miles (652 km)
Excellence AWD Two motors 4.6 sec 374 miles (602 km)

Inside, you get a big touchscreen with Google built in, a head-up display and a panoramic roof. There's also a small front trunk on top of the main cargo space.

How much and when?

BYD says European dealers will start selling it in the first quarter of 2027. There's no official price yet. Electrek guesses it could start a little above £47,995 (approx. US$65,000) in the UK, but that's an estimate, not a BYD number. The company hasn't confirmed UK pricing, trim details or an exact sales date.

What is still unknown?

Beyond price, we don't know how fast the charging network will actually arrive, or how the car does in independent tests. We found no announced date for independent range or charging verification, and with sales not due until early 2027, those results are unlikely to arrive much before then. One more wrinkle: BYD already sells plug-in hybrids called Atto 8 in some other markets, so this battery-electric European model is a different vehicle. Separately, BYD showed its Shark DMO plug-in hybrid pickup in Paris, due in Europe in the first half of 2027.

What happens next?

Watch for European pricing, the first outside charging tests and the first Flash Charging stations opening. Would you trust a nine-minute claim before someone else has timed it?

The WattsUpNext take: BYD's new seven-seat Atto 8 electric SUV promises very fast charging, but until prices, independent tests and a real charging network show up, the nine-minute figure remains a company claim.
