Jaguar has finally shown the car behind its much-mocked rebrand. The Type 01, a four-door electric grand tourer, made its debut in New York this week, but you can't buy one yet: orders open in early 2027 and first deliveries are due in the second half of that year. If you remember Jaguar as the maker of sports sedans that ordinary professionals could afford, this is a very different company. Jaguar told CNBC the Type 01 starts at $130,000 in North America. JLR's own releases give only a UK price, £130,000 (around US$173,000).
It's a big, fast car. Jaguar claims more than 1,000 metric horsepower. It's roughly as long as a Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Jaguar makes a point of saying it was designed, engineered and built in Britain.
Check the highway range
The range Jaguar leads with is an expected EPA figure of up to 400 miles (644 km). Further down its own release there's a lower number, for steady highway driving: up to 320 miles (515 km). A grand tourer is built for long trips, so owners will probably live with that second figure more than the first. The EPA also hasn't published an official rating yet. The 400 is what Jaguar expects to get, not a result.
Musk's question still needs an answer
Jaguar didn't stop building cars all at once. The XE, XF and F-Type ended production at Castle Bromwich in mid 2024, the I-Pace and E-Pace followed in Graz, Austria, in December 2024, and the last F-Pace, the final gas-powered Jaguar, left Solihull on December 19, 2025. In November 2024 Jaguar ran an ad campaign full of brightly dressed models and slogans like "copy nothing," with no cars in it, and Elon Musk replied with a mocking "Do you sell cars?". JLR, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles following the split of India's Tata Motors, says the "Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era," in the words of Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover. The brand has also signed actor Florence Pugh as its first ambassador.
For now, the honest answer to Musk is still "not yet." Orders open early next year, and Jaguar is aiming for first deliveries in the second half of 2027. That's a target, not a promise. Even if Jaguar hits it, showrooms will have gone a long stretch with no new Jaguar to sell.
The real test comes when the order books open and buyers decide what a Jaguar badge is worth. Porsche's Taycan lineup runs from $105,800 to $243,700 in the US, so Jaguar is pitching its comeback in the middle of Porsche's electric range, at roughly twice the price of the cheapest Taycan.
Since this story was published
JLR has confirmed that the Jaguar Type 01 will be built at its Solihull plant in the West Midlands. In its release from the New York reveal, JLR says the car "will be built in Solihull using a dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA)," with production starting in 2027 (JLR).
According to the same release, the electric drive units and battery packs will be made in Wolverhampton, and the pressed body panels will come from Halewood, Merseyside (JLR). Automotive World also reported that UK output will begin in 2027.
