Amazon (AMZN) and Tata Motors say thousands of electric trucks will join Amazon's freight network in India, starting in Delhi. It's the company's biggest step beyond small last-mile delivery vehicles, and the two firms call it the country's largest e-truck deployment by an e-commerce company.

The first trucks were flagged off in Delhi on 27 October by Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. That opening batch is just 20 Tata Ultra E.7 trucks, timed for the festive-season freight rush, so almost the whole plan is still ahead.

Carriers, not Amazon, buy the trucks

Tata builds them, but Amazon's carrier partners own and run them. electrive describes this as an asset-light approach that lets Amazon electrify without a big outlay. That makes the headline figure a target for others to meet, not an Amazon purchase order. The sources give no price and don't say how many trucks are firm orders.

The coverage we found also leaves the business case unstated. It carries no Amazon explanation of why it is doing this or what savings it expects, and no comment from independent logistics or EV analysts on how this compares with e-truck rollouts elsewhere.

What the Ultra E.7 can and can't do

The Ultra E.7 is a light-duty truck, and the range of up to 130 km comes from the manufacturer's figures as reported by electrive. We found no independent test of it. If it holds, that suits city and inter-facility runs, not long hauls. Amazon's next phase, along the Delhi to Bengaluru to Chennai corridor, leans on charging hubs built with Yahhvi, which has already set up charging yards for the company. No date was given for the highway phase.

Delhi's 2026 EV policy adds a nudge: the first 1,000 privately owned medium-duty electric trucks registered can enter the city at any hour for a decade, skipping the usual no-entry windows. Automotive World says that gives early operators an edge over diesel rivals. Tata's Rajesh Kaul says electric trucking in India has moved "beyond the pilot stage". That's Tata's view, and no cost figures came with it.

Next to watch: how many trucks are actually on the road once the festive season ends, and whether that 130 km range holds up in daily use. Would you trust an electric truck on a freight corridor yet?
