Hyundai's Ioniq 9 wins over families, but Kia's hybrid wins on price

Reviewers who loaded Hyundai's three-row EV with kids and luggage say it works. With the tax credit gone, up to $7,000 USD in rebates still leaves it well above Kia's Telluride Hybrid.

Hyundai built the Ioniq 9 for parents who've wanted to go electric but couldn't give up a third row. The people who've tested it with kids and luggage mostly say it works. The harder part now is the price. The federal tax credit Hyundai leaned on at launch is gone, so the company is paying for discounts itself, with up to $7,000 cash back this month. Kia's new Telluride Hybrid still starts about $12,500 below the cheapest Ioniq 9 before any deals.

That's the tension at the heart of this car. Hyundai pitched it as a family vehicle first. "IONIQ 9 features a beautifully executed cabin that offers the space families need and premium finishes they desire," said Olabisi Boyle, who leads product planning at Hyundai Motor North America. Motor1's first drive, republished by The Thrill of Driving, put it more bluntly in its headline: "It's The Electric SUV For Real Families".

Fine for the kids, tight for the tall

Then the testers climbed into the back. Kelley Blue Book liked the airy, unusually quiet cabin. But its six-foot reviewer ended up in the third row with his knees pressed into the seat ahead, and KBB says the way-back is best for kids and short hops. Electrek was kinder. Its tester said adults fit fine if the middle row slides forward a little. Autoweb landed in between, calling the third row "habitable in a pinch" and wishing Hyundai sold an eight-seat version.

Car seats tell a similar story. The fancier trims swap the second-row bench for two captain's chairs, so you can't fit three seats across one row. Cars.com found car seat anchors on both middle chairs and both third-row seats. In its test, though, the fixed third-row head restraints pushed a forward-facing seat away from the seatback. Behind all of that is a cargo area that swallows a big grocery run, and with the rows folded the back starts to feel like a small van.

The road trip, where it mostly shines

Long drives are where Hyundai expected the Ioniq 9 to win families over. Every version is rated for more than 300 miles (483 km) on a charge, and Autoweb's test car backed that up in real driving. It also comes with a Tesla-style plug, so you can pull into Tesla (TSLA) Superchargers as well as other networks.

Electrek put that to work on a family-length road trip. On the fastest stations, charging was quick. At Superchargers, which run at a lower voltage than the Ioniq 9's electrical system is built for, the same stop stretched to about 40 minutes. One stop like that is a snack and a bathroom break. Three of them in a day push dinner back.

The software grated too. Electrek found that the navigation left the driver to pick charging stops, one-pedal driving switched itself off after every restart or shift into reverse, and the phone app sometimes lagged badly. None of that would stop a sale. On a holiday weekend with a full back seat, it adds up.

The question parents will actually ask

When Hyundai announced pricing, it said the Ioniq 9 qualified for the full federal clean vehicle credit. The IRS now says that credit isn't allowed for any vehicle bought after September 2025. This month's rebate covers most of what buyers lost, but RealCarTips warns the amounts vary by trim and region, and the offers end in early November. Even the full cash back leaves the cheapest Ioniq 9 several thousand dollars above the cheapest Telluride Hybrid.

Charging at home claws some of that back. Autoweb figured the Ioniq 9 costs less than half as much to run on home power as Hyundai's gas Palisade does on fuel. Against a thrifty hybrid, our rough math puts the yearly savings at a few hundred dollars, and less if you lean on public fast chargers, which cost more.

A base Telluride is also a plainer car, and KBB says the Ioniq 9 feels like the premium choice even next to the Palisade. Its reviewers suggest skipping the top versions, saying the dual-motor SE or SEL "makes the most sense for most families". People buy this car because they want a quiet electric family hauler, not because it's the cheapest way to move a big family.

Hyundai hasn't posted pricing for a 2027 Ioniq 9 yet. What it offers once the current rebates run out will show how hard it plans to fight for these buyers as dealers clear out 2026 stock. So, parents who've done the math: is a quiet electric cabin and charging at home worth several thousand dollars more than a hybrid Telluride, or does the third row settle it for you?
