Porsche's next Boxster will be electric-only. The 911 won't be

Porsche says the electric Boxster and Cayman reach full production in 2028. Its CEO also promises the 911 will never be electric, though hybrid 911s are still part of the plan.

Porsche's next Boxster and Cayman will run on batteries alone, with 2028 as their first full year of production. In Weissach this week, CEO Michael Leiters also promised the 911 never will. If you want a mid-engine Porsche with a flat-six behind your head, you've missed your chance for now. Production of the gas Boxster and Cayman ended in October 2025, and a Porsche spokesman told CarBuzz that "at present, there are no plans for another combustion-engine version of the 718".

Leiters set out the plan on Wednesday at a Capital Markets Day in Weissach, where Porsche has its development centre. The company used it to lay out its strategy for the next decade. Porsche's release lists the electric Boxster and Cayman, plus a new small SUV that will be sold next to the electric Macan and offered with gas and plug-in hybrid power. Engineers put the battery behind the seats instead of under the floor, so you still sit low. Car and Driver, which rode along in a prototype at Weissach, reported that the electric car carries 55.2% of its weight over the rear axle, compared with 59.8% for the gas version, according to Electrek. Auto Express, which took its own ride, also put the figure at about 55%.

"Never" comes with fine print

"I can assure you: the 911 will never be electric," Leiters told journalists at a media briefing in Weissach the day before the investor event, finews.asia reported. Porsche's own strategy release doesn't include the line. Electrek wasn't convinced. It added "(yes it will)" to its headline and pointed to combustion bans in key markets. Earlier this year Leiters picked his words more carefully. He told shareholders there would be "no fully electric 911" and called hybrid power a "fundamental building block" for the car, CarBuzz reported. So what he's ruled out is a battery-only version, not electrification.

The cheapest sports car goes first

Here's the odd part. Porsche is pulling back on EVs overall, and its release says it will stick with gas, plug-in hybrid and electric cars and keep investing in combustion and hybrid drives. Reuters says the company plans to cut 9,000 jobs over the next decade after its profit margin almost disappeared last year. Even so, the car that goes fully electric is the Boxster, the one that brings new buyers into the brand.

If the electric Boxster sells well, Leiters' "never" could start to look shaky. If it flops, that backs him up. Porsche will preview a new mid-engine supercar next week. It hasn't announced a price for the electric Boxster yet, but Auto Express expects it on sale in 2027 at more than £100,000 (roughly US$134,000) in Britain, which would make Porsche's entry-level sports car a six-figure buy.
