Anthropic is suddenly on everyone's lips because details of its IPO paperwork leaked, and the numbers are wild. The Wall Street Journal first reported these figures from Anthropic's draft prospectus; The Motley Fool and Seeking Alpha have since summarized those reports. Here is the whole story in about three minutes.
What is Anthropic?
Anthropic is the AI lab behind Claude, a chatbot that competes head to head with OpenAI's ChatGPT. It was founded by former OpenAI employees, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, who are now CEO and president. Reports at the time said they left over differences about the group's direction after OpenAI took Microsoft's investment in 2019. Anthropic is organized as a public benefit corporation, a structure meant to balance profit with a stated mission, and Google is among its investors.
Claude has long come in three sizes, named Haiku, Sonnet and Opus, which Mashable described when the iPhone app launched in 2024. More recently, Anthropic said it is merging its Claude chat and Cowork tools for enterprise customers. Every conversation starts as a chat, and when a task needs code or files, Claude carries on in a sandboxed cloud workspace and hands back the finished work.
Why is everyone talking about it now?
The Wall Street Journal reported details from a draft IPO prospectus, and The Motley Fool summarized them, so the Fool is relaying the Journal's account rather than serving as a primary source. Seeking Alpha is likewise reporting second hand on the Journal's account. Anthropic could list as early as mid-November, but its public S-1 filing isn't out yet. Until that appears, treat the figures below as press reports of a draft, not audited results.
| Item | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Revenue, first half of 2026 | about $16.3 billion |
| Revenue, same period a year earlier | $1.1 billion |
| Computing spend, first half | nearly $9 billion |
| Net loss, first half | $80.7 billion |
| Computing commitments, next 7 to 10 years | about $450 billion, mostly noncancelable |
Is an $80 billion loss as bad as it sounds?
Not quite. Roughly $72 billion of it was a bookkeeping hit linked to how convertible notes and similar funding tools are valued. Those charges grow as the company's valuation rises, so part of the loss is a byproduct of investor enthusiasm.
The real money pressure is computing. Anthropic owes more than $160 billion to lease Google-designed chips in a deal involving Broadcom (AVGO), and it is negotiating more deals that could add up to $150 billion. Total commitments already top $600 billion and could pass $750 billion.
What does the company worry about?
About a third of the draft covers risk factors. Roughly one-fifth of revenue came from just two customers, and Anthropic expects a limited number of customers to supply much of its revenue for the foreseeable future. It also flags data center backlash and the chance that misaligned models cause real harm, noting that models can show self-preserving behavior, including blackmail-like responses to avoid shutdown. It even warned it may not find enough insurance for a catastrophic AI incident.
How does it compare with OpenAI?
Anthropic closed a $65 billion round at a $965 billion valuation in May and is reportedly seeking $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion in its IPO. OpenAI is nearing a raise of up to $30 billion at $1.25 trillion, and has said it will list in 2027. Annualizing Anthropic's first-half revenue would put a $2 trillion valuation at over 60 times sales, by the Fool's math.
What is still unknown?
We haven't seen the public S-1, so audited figures, share structure and the final price range are open, and the reports say only that mid-November is possible, not fixed. We also haven't confirmed details of the Claude Duet agent product that other outlets covered this week.
Watch for the public S-1, which must be out at least 15 days before the roadshow begins.
Would you buy into an AI lab whose biggest bills are for chips it hasn't used yet?
The WattsUpNext take: Anthropic is growing faster than almost any company its size, but it has promised hundreds of billions in computing costs. Revenue has to keep climbing to justify that.
That's wattsup, and here's wattsnext: Tesla probably won't sell you a Cybercab by December 31
