The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has moved its AI Factory Accelerator Programme from pilot to full operation, giving startups access to public European compute, technical support and training. That matters to firms handling health or utility data, since the machines sit on European soil rather than in a foreign cloud.
Nvidia (NVDA) announced it in a company blog post, our main source for the results below, so those details are Nvidia's account. We have not been able to check them with BSC leaders, the startups or EU officials. Some BSC AI Factory services can now be reached through Nvidia Inception, the company's program for young firms, which adds training, mentoring and investor introductions. BSC's own programme page lists Nvidia as a tech partner, though it does not mention Inception.
What the AI Factory has done so far
BSC calls its AI Factory one of Europe's first and the first in Spain. Since opening in April 2025 it has delivered more than 800 services to private and public clients. An upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5, BSC's public supercomputer built on Nvidia accelerated computing, will be offered through the AI Factory and other European ones. The post gives no date or capacity for it.
BSC's page says the accelerator is equity-free and takes about 100 startups per batch, spread over four locations. Hands-on MareNostrum 5 access goes to top performers, not to everyone.
Three startups took the top title
At the pilot's demo day, three Inception members were named AI Champions.
Qatium makes water-network software that Nvidia says serves over 250 utilities across 16 countries. Its AI models, trained on MareNostrum 5, are in early production. Nvidia describes OneCareAI, a BSC spin-off, as building tools meant to catch signs of hidden atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, in ECGs that look normal, so doctors can spot stroke risk sooner. The post does not say whether the tools have regulatory approval or independent clinical validation. Avatia built a voice-driven, multi-agent system that acts as an AI coworker for pharmaceutical sales reps and gives doctors curated drug information.
Seven others are in the cohort: Agrikola AI, Elna Health, Lokutor, Montevive AI, Oppy, Pack2Earth and Up2Smart. Their work spans farming, medical imaging, speech, security, sales and packaging.
What the post leaves out
There are no figures on how much compute each startup gets, what it costs, or how clinical tools like OneCareAI's have been validated. Those are the claims to watch, along with the MareNostrum 5 extension.
Would you rather your startup trained on public European compute or on a commercial cloud?
