American Airlines (AAL) announced on October 8, 2026 that it plans to install Starlink across its entire mainline fleet, expanding the upgrade to Boeing jets with installations scheduled to begin in early 2027. For passengers, that brings the promise of better connectivity to more flights, including trips on twin aisle aircraft, although American hasn't announced a first passenger service date or fleetwide finish date.

The change fills a substantial hole in the earlier plan. American's May 2026 announcement covered more than 500 Airbus aircraft; Boeing single aisle and twin aisle jets are now included. The Points Guy's coverage, published May 26, 2026, highlighted the missing twin aisle aircraft as a remaining weakness in American's Wi Fi offering. For context, Reuters reported on June 9, 2026, that United's free Starlink service already covered more than a quarter of its daily flights, according to the airline.

American says the expanded fleet will use Starlink's Performance Aero Terminal, rated for speeds up to 1 Gbps per terminal. That's a terminal capability, not a promised speed for each passenger's phone. SpaceX says the service will support connectivity from gate to gate, but those are expectations for the future installation, not results from American passenger flights.

Free Wi Fi has separate rules

American's existing free Wi Fi offer requires an AAdvantage account, which is free to join. Its current passenger guide lists all single aisle aircraft, selected Boeing 787s and most regional aircraft as eligible, with paid options starting at $10. Today's announcement doesn't specify Starlink pricing or membership requirements, so the existing free offer shouldn't be treated as confirmation of the new service's terms.

Watch for the first passenger service date, a fleetwide completion schedule and access terms, all still unannounced.
