SpaceX has agreed to buy Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz airwaves for Starlink Mobile, with the transaction still awaiting Federal Communications Commission approval. Grain says the spectrum would support connections from both ground infrastructure and satellites, expanding the company’s options for reaching American phone users.
The agreement was announced October 8, 2026. Neither company disclosed the price; Reuters cited a Wall Street Journal report putting it at around US$8 billion in cash, based on unnamed people familiar with the matter.
Airwaves still need a network
The appeal is practical: lower frequency signals can travel farther and pass through walls and tree cover more effectively than higher frequency signals, Reuters reported. That helps explain why these licenses matter to a service trying to connect ordinary phones beyond the reach of conventional mobile coverage.
The purchase agreement doesn’t establish that Starlink Mobile can already replace your carrier. Grain explicitly makes closing conditional on FCC approval and other requirements, while Morgan Stanley analysts told Reuters they expect competitive pressure to develop gradually, beginning in rural areas. The analysts also said broader urban competition would require substantially more ground infrastructure and spectrum.
Grain acquired the portfolio from T Mobile in August, so these are existing wireless assets changing hands, rather than newly available frequencies. The next concrete milestone to watch is FCC approval of the spectrum transfer.
