Lucid's sub-$50,000 Cosmos is testing on California's Highway 101

Lucid now says its midsize SUV will ramp in the second half of 2027, and a prototype is already on public roads. Lucid's cash may run short before that date does.

Someone photographed a camouflaged prototype of Lucid's Cosmos on Highway 101 in Morgan Hill, California, about 40 miles (64 km) south of Lucid's Newark headquarters. Cosmos is the midsize SUV Lucid says will start under $50,000. If you've been waiting for a cheaper Lucid, this is the first public sign since August that the program is still moving.

The photos first appeared on Reddit and show the SUV from the side and rear. It isn't the first sighting, either. In May, an X user posted a photo of what looked like a camouflaged Cosmos prototype on test drives near Lucid's factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, parked next to a Tesla Model Y for scale, though the poster has since deleted it. The new photos come two months after Lucid (LCID) pushed the launch back. Production was due before the end of 2026, and Lucid now says it will scale up in the second half of 2027. The name isn't a rumor. Lucid announced Cosmos at its March 12 Investor Day, along with a second SUV called Earth, and the under-$50,000 price came from that event too. Treat the price as a target. You can't order one at that sticker today.

The specs are Lucid's claims as well. It has talked about a 69 kWh pack, 300 miles (483 km) of range, up to 4.5 miles per kWh (7.2 km per kWh), and charging that adds more than 200 miles (322 km) in 14 minutes, all through a new drive unit called Atlas. In its second-quarter results, Lucid said midsize prototypes were in validation, durability and crash testing, including cold-weather work in New Zealand. The first production cars will come from its AMP-2 plant in Saudi Arabia. Prototypes are being built in Coolidge, Arizona.

CEO Silvio Napoli, who took over in June, calls the delay a quality decision. He argues that the Air and Gravity both reached buyers before they were ready. That's fair, but the timing is tight. Lucid ended June with $3.0 billion in total liquidity, which it says will last "well into 2027". That's roughly the same window in which Cosmos is supposed to ramp.

The volume gap shows why so much rides on this car. Lucid built 4,774 vehicles in the second quarter. WardsAuto puts its yearly capacity at about 90,000. The company also cut 18% of its staff in June, after a 12% cut in February.

Next up is Lucid's third-quarter report, which should update that cash estimate it put at "well into 2027". Would a Lucid under $50,000 tempt you away from a Model Y?
