Big night ahead for a car that has been "coming soon" since 2017. Here's what we know going into the event, based on Tesla's event reporting.

Tesla will livestream an outdoor Roadster event on X on Thursday, October 15, at 7:55pm Central. It was first set for October 1, then called off because of severe weather in Texas, since the demo has to happen in the open air. Tesla said the show "can only be held outdoors," and Elon Musk blamed high winds.

Nobody knows what we'll actually see. Tesla hasn't said whether it will show a prototype, final specs or a delivery date. Some reports speculate the demo could include something dramatic, such as SpaceX cold gas thrusters on a remote-operated, non-street-legal car, but that is reporting, not a Tesla announcement. Back in 2017 the promise was a supercar that hit 60 mph (97 km/h) in under two seconds, with production due in 2020. One outlet now says 2027 or 2028 is the target, so treat any date as a promise until a car ships.

The weather is the reason for the first delay, and it could matter again. Because the demo has to happen outdoors, a second storm could in theory push things back once more, though none of the reporting we checked says that is planned.

The timing gap is the bigger story. If 2027 or 2028 holds, the car will have slipped seven or eight years from the 2020 date Tesla gave in 2017. Electrek counts at least six slipped production dates and notes Tesla has never shipped a Roadster to a customer. The Verge's view is that the Roadster could easily have stayed vaporware, which is the industry word for a product that is announced and never built.

autoX's headline says specs and price are expected on Thursday, but Tesla itself hasn't confirmed either, so read that as a hope, not a promise.

For the wider backdrop, our piece on September EV prices is a good companion, and Volkswagen's cheap EV orders in Europe shows where demand is healthier. Neither changes the fact that the Roadster's original 2020 date came and went.

Will you be watching the Roadster stream, or waiting for a real delivery date before you care?

The WattsUpNext take: Tesla's Roadster has been promised for nearly nine years, so a livestream is not a product. We'll believe it when there's a price, a spec sheet and a delivery date.
